The Mid-Atlantic study area includes all or part or eight states (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia), and the District of Columbia.  The region's total land area of almost 163 thousand square miles represents about 5 percent of the nation's contiguous land area.
